Hi All,

I've got Deore LX Hubs on the rear, I've just stripped them, cleaned everything out, fresh grease, and put it back together.

However when I spin the wheel the cones tighten and the wheel stops spinning.

I've stripped and cleaned them before but I think I'm missing something simple, can anyone advise?

No pitting in hubs or cones, I'm baffled.

the caps holding the ball bearings in, I have the groove facing inwards? Could I have put them on wrong way round?

Thanks in advance for any help.

It sounds to me like you didn't tighten the locknut up nice and snug against the cone, leaving the cone free to move.

Are you using proper cone spanners when servicing your hubs? They make the cone and locknut adjustment so much easier. It's not really possible/very hard to tighten the cone and locknut up against eachother correctly without using them.

As above.. if you adjust the cone nut so it just drags then hand tighten the lock nut up to it....then keeping the lock nut static, back of the cone nut so it is tight against the lock nut. If you have quick release skewers a tiddly amount of play is often taken up by tightening the QR lever.
