Hi there, I'm new to the forum,

Just wondered if anybody has been unfortunate enough to suffer a separated shoulder injury and if so, any advice on how long I should leave it before I get back on my bike?

Injury occurred 5 weeks ago on my daily commute but only just operated on 5 days ago. I'm being told by the hospital that it is a 6 week physio course . Shortly before the accident I purchased a turbo trainer and was planning to do a few indoor winter miles but I'm now thinking I can make use of this during my recovery.

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks

Turbo only until you can pull properly on the bars.

Mine was skiing 30 plus years ago, but a key issue, from advice at the time and friends' experiences, is not to risk a second dislocation by going back too early, the surrounding muscles need time to build up strength to hold the joint together (the shoulder is inherently unstable without the muscle and tendon structures surrounding it)

A friend dislocated his, did stuff too soon, fell and dislocated it again. Last I heard he was sill having recurrent dislocations when (errm euphemistically) doing press-ups - talk about a passion killer!

Follow the advice from your doc and physio - and if you have not DO see a private specialist sports physio, good as the NHS service is they are interested in getting you mobile and functional, not sport ready.

Ooooh nasty. I did mine lifting an overweight dog who wiggled like a good'un. The most energy he had expended in months. Very unfunny.
Took weeks to heal as, being self employed, taking time off was not really an option.

Follow what ever advice that the medics have given you, it's the only way. +1 on the Turbo but run it by your doc first, just in case.

I'm having a shoulder op in March (torn labrum), my surgeon has already told me I'm going to be off the bike for some while. However, he specifically asked me if I had a turbo/static bike as I'll be able to use that (although I don't know how soon post op)

But, as above, make sure you check with the physio and have them put you on the exercise bike at the hospital to check all is ok

My surgeon has a very good website with info on his rehab protocol, e.g. But depending on what surgery you had
