Go on, tilt your head!
Evening,

I've been spending a lot of time and money on my new road bike recently so I figure its about time I give my faithful hard tail 2003 Carrera Fury a bit of TLC. As the model suggests I've had this bike for about 10 years now and it's never had a service! Only really picked up this cycling bug over the last 6-8 months so that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it :-)

I'm happy with replacing brake pads, can't be harder than a car.

I'm guessing I should be replacing the rear cassette and chain? It has Shimano Deore groupset so I assume I replace like for like?

Do front cranks generally suffer from wear and need replacement?

Finally, there is a weird ticking noise coming from the bottom bracket area when turning the pedals, any ideas what that is likely to be? Some help required in this area please.

To save costs and improve experience I plan to do all work myself, I'll then possibly take it to an LBS to re-index gears (needs doing anyway) unless you peeps can give me some guidance on this also?

Thanks in advance

10 years old, yes it's likely you 'll need to change the chain and cassette. You will be fine replacing like for like.
Front chain rings do wear out. If the teeth look like 'hooks' or needles then replace rings or often cheaper, the whole chainset.
The ticking noise is either a pedal bearings or the bottom bracket bearings.
I suspect you are going to need to spend more on the tools to do the job than your lbs will probably charge.

As @rusty bearing has said, it will cost quite a bit in parts and then the hassle of you getting messy n dirty etc, take it to Halfords and we can do a comprehehnsive service (33 point check) for £49.99 or an elite service for £79.99 where the bike is stripped and rebuilt.

Sounds travel on bikes so a clicking noise from one area may indeed be from that area or something at the other end of the bike.

Try and confirm when the bike is stationary that the clicking is from the BB.

You will then need a crank removal tool and a specific BB tool to remove the BB - photo's would help to advise you on the precise tool.

I have the cheap toolkit from Aldi, not sure if that will have any of the tools I need? I'm fairly certain the clicking is coming from the bottom bracket. I don't really want to pay someone else to do the work, I don't gain any knowledge that way!

I'll get some pics up at some point today of the bottom bracket. Cheers guys.

IIRC correctly the Aldi tool kit contains pretty much everything you need for a bike of that era.
Take the chain off and spin the cranks to see if the BB bearings feel gritty. Also push cranks (at pedal spindle) towards the frame, to see if there is any movement between cranks and BB spindle/frame. If left one moves it's just a loose crank, if right one moves the BB is FUBAR, but they don't cost a lot to repair. If you get stuck, can you sling it in the back of the car and get over this way?

We have a book with just about everything we need to know to fix the bikes. There are lots on the market for self tuition. I reckon that our book has saved us a lot of money in the bike fixing department.

Our Aldi tool kit is excellent. It has done everything we have asked of it so far, except the 10mm spanner which bent. We have a nice Snap-on 10mm in our car toolkit so its been moved over for the duration.

If I get stuck I'll be taking a trip to Chandlers Ford then!

As of yesterday my current priority is getting our Focus TDCI to start so I'll get round to the bike later in the week hopefully.

For the clicking noise, try taking the pedals off and cleaning the threads. I had an annoying clicking noise and someone on here suggested doing what ive just said. Worked a treat and no cost!
