Self-build - help with choosing a chain set/BB needed

I'm making progress with a self-build project (on paper, at least), but I'm stuck with this element. I'm building a Nexus 8 wheel and putting it in an old Dawes frame. The only details I have to go on are the Nexus chain line (42.7mm I gather) and the fact that my frame has an English thread BB.

I know that Shimano have a chain set designed for the Nexus, but do I have other options? I assume a similar single chain set would work? But I'm not sure where to start with BB selection to ensure a good chain-line with the Nexus (especially given that this frame was never expecting this kind of thing). Is it just trial and error? Are there any standards I can work with? I'm reading lots and slowly teaching myself, but can't see much info on this area and would appreciate any pointers.

Thanks

Thanks Vernon, fellow SG admirer...

From what I can gather, it's all a bit hit and miss - grab a BB, try it out. I'll take my chances.

Fixed wheel fanatic.
I beleive chainset makers will specify a bb length to give you a standard chain line (as per Vernons link)
There will always be a bit of leeway, but you can get shims/spacers to tweak the spacing a little.
Mixing and matching? sounds like a nightmare to me, but might be the way to get a real custom fit.
Good luck!

I used a triple chainset with a Nexus hub. Mounted the chain ring in the middle position and shimmed it to get the right chainline.
