I've just swapped the rear tyre on my partner's Hybrid bike to make it quieter on the turbo. Since doing this, the gears aren't changing properly - i.e. when the lever is pushed, sometimes the gear won't change and then the next change will jump 2 gears, or jump one and rattle.

I'm guessing I've accidentally moved something - any suggestions? Please bear in mind that I have a mechanics age of about 4.

First thing I would check is that the wheel axle is seated correctly.

The derailier shouldnt be damaged, or even knocked out of true unless it got a reasonable whack as you removed or re-fitted the wheel.

I am certainly no expert, but I thought I had messed mine up after changing a rear tyre. The gears were not working correctly and like an idiot I started trying to adjust them. This did not work and then I realised that I had not put the back wheel in correctly as it is a bit awkard. There was a gap between the smaller gear cog and where it joins the frame which should not be there. I undid the quick realease and fitted the wheel correctly and the gap was gone. But my gears were messed up due to me messing. I figured them out myself by downloading the installation manual from Shimano's website. To me it was just really setting the high and low limit screw settings, then messing a bit with cable tension to get the change spot on. Somebody with more experience will tell you more. But make sure that the rear wheel is sited correctly with no obvious gaps.

Next, take a look where the cable seats into the braze on at the back of the rear seatstay. If the casing isn't seated properly it will act the ned. After that it's down to re-adjusting the cable tension. Chances are the wheel's not in the same place in the frame so it's altered an adjustment somewhere.

I checked the axle and re-positioned the wheel. The gears now work fine. Thanks people
