Some people may remember me from my other thread 5 down 5 to go http://www.cyclechat.net/threads/5-stone-down-5-to-go.133039/ here.

Anyway after taking some advice I started eating a little more but also missed out on over a months cycling due to yet another chest infection and then a week on holiday followed by an infected bite on my leg that made walking a stuggle. I am thinking I should start taking multi vitamins or something to stop the chest infections and infections from bites ect as I get bit loads all summer as I go fishing and I have never been like this before.

I am now all good apart from the fact I stopped smoking and although I am only 4 days in I never intend on smoking again. However my chest is very sore when I am on the bike pushing it so I am curious if this could be because of stopping smoking or just coincidence.

I am going out tomorrow on the bike but I will be taking it easy rather than trying to beat my hybrid times on my new road bike.

Regarding weight loss. I went from 24stone 9 in April to 19 stone 8 in June I am now at 17 stone on the nose so I am only 2 stone off my target weight but I am curious what I should do for long rides regarding foods?

I purchased myself a Giant Defy 1 2014 the other day and I am looking at doing some sportives so I am looking for a good tyre to do this ideally with great puncture protection and maybe some decent innertubes to go with them.
Last but not least I am also looking for a co2 pump to throw in my jersy pockets as I don't want to have to carry a pump.

Thanks in advance.

After 4 days your lungs will be cleaning but should not be sore.. You said you have recently had a chest infection, if you did a lot of coughing maybe there is some tissue damage. When it come to chest pains when excising (especially when pushing it) please go and see your Doctor.

Good work on the weight loss and quitting smoking, like a lot of others here I did the same (4.5 stone lost and 12 weeks cig free) . The next week is the worse and then it gets a lot lot easier ! E-cigs helped me quit and then moved to zero nicotine liquid .

(I'm not a doctor but) it sounds like your immune system is in a poor state. Get plenty of rest, don't over do anything, try to keep stress down and eat well. Vitamins will help if you have a deficiency, but it's better to get them from food if you can.

Agreed that chest pain shouldn't be ignored, and if you've been a smoker for some time I believe some emphysema is to be expected, so it would be good to understand what state your body is in. See a doctor, but keep up the cycling in the mean time: just don't push too hard.

If you want puncture protection, go for marathon plus. Narrowest you can get is 25, inner tubes aren't that important if the tyre is correctly pumped up, Halfords own brand are more than adequate. People will tell you that the marathon plus will slow you down but to me the increased puncture protection outweighs the increased resistance for me.

Thanks everyone.

I have narrowed my tyre choices down to.
Continental grand prix 4 season
Gatorskins
Specialized armadillo

The tyre size I will use is 700x25c as I find that more cumfy than I do 23c.

As for my chest its getting easier and I still don't want to smoke so its looking good.

Any Chest pain should be checked and without sounding flippant, its the easiest way to get a thorough check in A&E, i went a few years back with chest pain and they flew me in and done bundles of checks, with very little waiting! 4 stone, no fags and a now a bike later i feel 10 times better!

Dont mess around with it, get it checked and then get out on the bike whilst enjoying your new weight loss and the clean air from not smoking!
