I am an absolute novice to the cycling sport. As well as cycling out-doors, I wanted to invest in a turbo trainer and I haven't the foggiest idea how to look for a good buy or what features I should be looking for. I would welcome your suggestions and help please.

Thank you in advance.
Kind regards

What's your budget, decide that and go from there. Also, do you have neighbours, some are pretty noisy. You'll also want a fan if planning on pedalling hard

Feature wise an adjustable resistance is all you need, anything beyond that is a bit of a gimmick. You'll want to position yourself in front of the TV / tablet / computer with something to watch, with a fan pointing at you to combat boredom and sweating. A pair of headphones to use with the TV is advised as turbos are generally quite noisy.
I just got an entry level TACX trainer, does the trick when conditions are bad outside.

:welcome: to CC

My advice FWIW is to buy appropriate weather gear instead and go out and ride.

My reason? Turbo's are the spawn of Satan:evil:

However, if you choose to ignore that, and you are of course perfectly welcome to do so ;), then buy a second hand one.

Loads of people buy them, realise that they are indeed the devils work and sell them on quickly, so there's always a plentiful supply of basically new ones going cheap.

That way if you try it and come to agree with my first sentence you won't lose a shed load of cash when you also sell yours on

FYI - there is also a shed load of similar threads you can access via the search box, there'll be loads of advice in there for you to mooch through as well ;)

If you buy a turbo also get a electric fan to help keep you cool. keep a towel and plenty of water within reach and buy a cheap wired computer that will work of the rear wheel. then you will be able to tell how many miles you have NOT done

I have got a turbo and have the same opinions as quite a few people on this site. I do stick at it though and something is better than nothing. But last year I got a set of rollers and they are great. You can't beat riding outside, but as an alternative they are great. They really teach you how to learn to handle your bike and peddle smoothly. A far better alternative in my opinion.

I like the trainer, I got mine second hand, as people seem to either love or hate them. I went to a fellows garage sale, and I think mine cost $5 US. I'm pretty happy with it, although I ride whenever conditions permit, or go to spin class, because turbo training is usually quite boring. I am well stocked on Hollywood epic movies for just this purpose.

got one from halfrauds with a variable resistance on it. you get a skewer and I use motivo app on iPod as motivation. good when you just don't have time to go out. just be careful with the tyres you need to change the rear or you will shred your tyres. you can get turbo tyres or just get an old one
