Hi all-

Time to replace the crankset on my 2010 spec secteur elite triple.
According to the spec it is a shimano FC-R553 crankset and the BB is "with crankset".
Silly question...does that mean buy the crankset and bottom bracket is all included?

If not anyone know which BB I need to buy? Also where can I get the crankset...not much coming up on wiggle, etc?
Many thanks....John

From this, you can see that the FC-R553 is one of Shimano's non-series chainsets for flat bar bikes. It also shows that it is fully compatible* with their drop bar chainset FC5603, which is the last 105 triple chainset (current being the FC5703).

To convince yourself, you can play spot the difference between these two docs (R553 vs 105).

While all Hollowtech 2 chainsets (which these are) come with the spindle since it is an integrated part, some come with bb cups and some don't, but they are not very expensive. This £65 deal from Ribble e.g. doesn't.

* while Shimano flat bar chainsets can be compatible with their drop bar counterparts, their front shifters and front mechs are generally neither compatible nor interchangeable.

You smasher - cheers for speedy reply.
That ribble deal looks just the ticket....the 105triple at £65 and the £15 BB and I'm good to go right?
Thanks again

I replaced mine last year and the chainset you need is the 5603 10 Speed Chainset the 172.5 30/39/50 (check the number stamped on the back of the crank you already have it should be 172.5) it is dead easy to fit took me about half an hour, I got the black one from ribble as they were cheapest at the time they have the black and silver:

Black: CLICK ME
Silver: CLICK ME

I dont know which bottom bracket you need, is there something wrong with the one on the bike ?

Here is the link to a thread I started last year about this -> CLICK ME

Brilliant thanks.
Yes seen the black set - will go for that to match current...mines a 175 as I'm a big lad.
Don't think the BB needs doing just figured may as well at teh same time.
Bound to need it soon - covered about 8k on the bike without changing so it must be soon?
Thanks again.

I would do the BB unless it needs it but if you do make sure you get the removal tool.

Fitting the crank is just a matter of removing the none drive crank then I just knocked it through with rubber mallet then reverse to fit new on I was suprised now easy it was.

Read the fitting instructions refering to the stopper plate and make sure it is clicked in place. I am not sure if you get the tool for removing the crank center with the chainset, if not you will need TLC-FC16 cant find it on ribble but you can get it on chainreaction etc its only a couple of quid it looks like this:

If you look here CLICK ME you will find all the shimano 105 docs and if you CLICK ME you will find the fitting instructions and if you CLICK ME you will find an exploded diagram.
