As per the thread title really.

The background is that for a long time I've ridden my commute seated all the way, as I can easily manage all the hills, even on single-speed. However, recently I've been concerned that I might be neglecting some muscles, as when I needed to get out of the saddle to make it up the last bit of a long steep hill on fixed-wheel, I didn't seem to have much extra power.

Lots of muscles get neglected while cycling - depends what you are trying to achieve...

i think getting out the saddle does use slightly different muscles but the real advantage is getting more weight on the pedals, i do tend to stomp when out the saddle and like you prefer to stay seated

I would guess that seated involves more ankle flexing and uses the calves more.
Also the Quads do more work
Out of the ssddle involves using gravity and body mass to drive the pedal down.
But I would also guess that it depends on whether you "swap" the gravitational assistance for muscle power or use gravity to enhance it

Must be different muscles ... I can be nearly done in on a climb when seated but can manage the last bits if standing. Also on longer climb can go between the two to 'rest'
