I have a topeak beam rack that clamps onto the seatpost .I find it great for long days out on the bike as i hate having stuff in my jersey pockets.

The reaction from other cyclists range from what a great idea to why lug all that junk about on a road bike. I only carry the same stuff that wou;ld otherwise be crammed into pockets and underseat bag.

Would the extra windage/ weight really make a noticeable difference to a mediocre rider like me who never races but does Audax , sportives and social type rides?

Only thing to watch is there not allowed on carbon seatposts. Not sure what the caad 8 has.

This is the one i have My link If you have a Large or x large frame you get that one if you have a medium or small frame you get the straight one.

Why not buy a saddle bag and saddle bag rack, as the rack attaches to saddle rails and not the seat post.

I've been debating whether to get a full-blown rack or seat-post rack with a trunk bag, but that Altura Arran looks neat... is it waterproof?

Yes it's fully waterproof, easy to attach / unattach to the bike (once the seatpost clamp is in place) and easy to carry around while popping into a shop.

I have two spare inner tubes / bike pump / repair kit / tool kit / lights (front and rear x 2 each / Buff / Gillette / gloves / mobile phone / spare batteries / spare cash in mine and still room for more if I expand the bag (via a zip around the middle) plus if you buy the extra Seatpost clip you can attach it to another bike in seconds

I have the same one Banjo, they are very good.
The compatible bag is excellent too, very quick to slide into position, foldaway paniers for extra capacity.
It has been great as a commuter option, I even use it on forum rides and day trips
Who cares if it weighs an extra half a kilo than a saddle bag

I imagine the 'no carbon seatpost' is the same as not clamping into a workstand, puts too much stress onto it.
