Sealed Cartridge Wheel Bearings

I have some 2013 Fulcrum Racing 7 CX's and last May took the easy way out and use a bike shop to get the bearings replaced whilst my old bike was off the road (cracked carbon forks)...

Since then I have covered way too much distance and the front wheel has picked up some lateral play and a drumming noise.... before long the rear bearings will also need replacing as some of you know, I don't exactly stay on road all the time and the lane I live down is err... well dirty/mucky is probably the best phrase....

I don't want to go down the wheels back to the shop route (though I probably should because I haven't covered more than 4,000km since May on those bearings but getting the wheels to Chester and dealing with warranty (5,000km) is too complicated right now and I can't afford to have my bike off the road and have no way of getting the wheels to Chester as it is... and bike shops don't generally like the 'can you do it while I wait' approach.... so I have given up.... it is probably cheaper just to replace them myself...

Having tracked down the bearings I need (Fulcrum 4-R5-004) which is a 28x12x8mm bearing with a code of 60012RS can someone please tell me, bearing in mind my requirements approaching winter, my track and the likes... which of the 16 results I should be getting... I think it is either these or these but I am definitely having one of those days... :wacko:

Or alternatively if you can point me in the direction of someone who has the Fulcrum/Campagnolo ones in and in stock I would be most grateful or some site you know (I have never used the site linked above) etc...

You will be fine with either one of the two you have picked out, the difference between them is brand name. the bearing will come with seals both sides, the fulcrum diagram shows a seal on the outer side only, the unwanted seal come out easy enough, and you can put some extra grease in before fitting. I buy bearings from the same place

Both you picked should be fine .
first set lasted and lasted as well - well passed what they were warrantied for, but this set (on the front at least - assuming the shop even changed them that is - I am beginning to have my doubts - will know soon enough) have not hence one of the reasons I don't want the palaver of getting back to the bike shop 15 miles away without a car... and given I used to do cup and cones hubs on my old road bike wheels, I reckon I should be able to manage sealed cartridge ones... thanks.

I used the FAG bearings in my fulcrum racing 7's, fitted them last year and have been used all year so far without any issues.
thanks - I think the biggest issue is probably the distance I have covered since May... :whistle: I'm averaging 1,000km a month at the moment with my bikes being my only transport and that type of mileage takes its toll on the bike - though strangely the chain has lasted better than the wheel bearings! - OK I have just realised exactly how worrying that last remark is!:eek:

As mentioned, SKF are the best bearings money can buy, followed closely by FAG bearings. Also, as mentioned, they'll come with a rubber seal on either side. I take one seal off (the side that will be against the hub) and just use more grease. Some bearings can be bought with 1 seal, 2 seals, no seals, rubber seals, metal seals etc.

No, don't do that. Seals perform two functions. The first is the obvious, to separate two liquids, grease on the inside, and water from the outside. The second function is to act as a barrier for the churning grease and to push it back into the ball track for recycling. If you remove one seal, the grease pushes to the side of least resistance (missing seal side) and settles there without returning to the ball race where it is needed. This leaves the balls and races running dry and deprives the opposite seal of lubrication. This seal then quickly burns away (burn like in rubbing an eraser on a table) and water gets in.

Here's a photo of such a bearing. Note how you can see the uncoated balls in the line where the grease sheared and a gap opened.

The 6001 is quite a common size (2RS is just the seal spec), so the Hope tools may well fit (bearing support bush and hub support bush).

Just done my front hub using the Hope bearing support bushes. No hammers involved, I'm lucky enough to own a massive Record vice, that opens wide enough to be used as a bearing press.
