Howdo,

A family friend wants to cycle from Coney Hall (near Bromley) down to New Milton (near Bournemouth) this summer, and has come to me for advice. She's not confident on big roads, and anticipates needing to break the journey with a B&B half way.

The only time I've done anything like this route, I picked up Ditchling and Southampton on the way in, and Bournemouth, Stonehenge, and Basingstoke on the way back. That was a far from direct line, featured some enormous roads, and I recall a good number of people offering very sound advice about which ones to avoid.

Does anyone have any thoughts about a good route down? Google maps suggests Banstead, Dorking, Billingshurst, Midhurst, Petersfield, Romsey, New Forest, New Milton.

Is there anything in that which you think she'd be better advised to skip? I distinctly recall Greg telling me that the general rule was to avoid all roads which fit the format A2n or A27n. Also, any recommendations for a good rest stop?

I'll try to coax her online today, and see if we can't close the loop a little.

Cheers for any advice you can offer,

Andy.

I could give you a detailed route from Petersfield if required. Check out http://www.sustainability-centre.org/# for an overnight stop.

Picking the routes from the Open Cycle Map. it looks like .......
The route 21 from SE London down to Crawley.
Then route 20 to Brighton.
Then route 2 along the coast.
.. will get you close without useing silly fast main roads.
Tweak as needed to miss off-road sections, big loops, etc, etc ........

Luck ..........

Not sure about the first bit but that would be an awful route from Winchester onwards, busy roads, major junctions, town centres.

A pair of 'back to back' 100km rides.

Good breakfast. Set off at 09:00. arrive at B&B at 18:00. No probs with an hour's lunch half way.

Your friend might have to make an effort to slow down, or she'll be too early at the B&B. ;)

That's wonderful. Thanks all. I've passed them on to Helen (my friend) with particular slant towards ticktockmy's suggestion and Opencyclemap. Hopefully she'll come onboard at cyclechat and say Hi.

Hi Andy - was wondering - did your friend do this run? I've been contemplating riding down to Parkstone to see a mate and doing it in a one-er, seeing as I missed out on the ton on Lonjog...

Trying to find a relatively easy, yet quiet run is proving taxing.

I believe she did, but it was a slow paced affair with an overnight stop en route. A man of your skills could take on the route ILB and self rode in 2009. We didn't go quite as far as Parkstone (turning North at Bournemouth) but we did go on to pick up Ringwood, Salisbury, Stonehenge, Stonehenge, Thruxton and Basingstoke before dying a (fairly unattractive) death.

Assuming you're only planning to ride one way (and have an irrational affection for the FNRttC Brighton route and ditchling) about 130 miles would do it. L2Brighton, then follow the coast to Bognor, Southampton, then dip down to Parkstone. Alternatively knock a few miles (and hills) off by doing hte FNRttC to Bognor, then heading along.

Watch out for the headwind on the coast

The only comment I can add is if you can avoid cycling on the A35 through the New Forest - it's not friendly to either cyclists or deer!
