After a recent visit from the puncture fairy, who also brought her twin sister along for the fun and got both front and rear tyres ( see my other thread about the disaster I had last night :wahhey: ) I've ended up prematurely having to shell out on a new pair of tyres.

Was looking at Mich Pro Race 3's as they seem to get rave reviews, but stumbled across a pair of Schwalbe Stelvio tyres on eBay :-

Raceguard HS376 ones, not the Stelvio Plus.

Anyone used these?. Have I made a wise choice?.

Seem good value for money to me.........I think.

I like stelvios, but they are a bit like party balloons when it comes to sharp things on the road.

Had no problems with them myself - ran them in the 25C wire on for 2,000 miles, as I recall. The rear got a nasty cut in it, and they were retired, but I don't remember them puncturing particularly frequently (for that, you have to go to the Kenda Kontenders that came fitted to the bike - truly appalling tyres for p* resistance).

I'm with cheap as chips Luganos at the mo, they've been better than anything else I've tried, seem to be very hardwearing, any flats have been proper ones from something big and sharp, they don;t seem to cut and pick up gravel and stones like the GP400 and the loathsome Ultra Gators (spits)

I've just ordered these to replace some very old Vredestein 700 x 28 which are beginning to split (but amazingly never visited by the p* fairy)

Seemed like a good price for a tyre which has been recommended by several on here.

Will be interesting to see how they go.

Cheers guys.

Well, they have been dispatched apparently.

Really wanted to get out on the bike today and do my usual local 30 mile route, but being tyreless I couldn't. So took the opportunity to give the bike a good all round clean and smother it in ArmorAll. ;)

I'll post back with my opinion of the Stelvio's once they arrive.

Good choice. I replaced the original Kendas on the SCR2 with Stelvio Raceguards pretty quickly after puncturing at least once a week.

Just replaced them after almost 2000 miles (because of a large gash running into the sidewall which was letting the inner-tube poke through) with a set of Stelvio Evolution tyres that I got for under £40 from Slane Cycles. These look more like Ultremos in style and they're proving just as grippy and fast as the old ones.

They're pretty resistant to flats unless you ride over something big and sharp - you'll realise that when you're able to pick lots of glass out of them on a weekly basis; the small stuff never makes it through the rubber !

My experience with a pair that I got off a guy on ebay, he was a racer, I went and collected them, all nicely boxed up in them jazzy little sort of hexagonal boxes:ohmy:, brand new, but the side walls started to fray:sad: and then bulge:sad:, they were rather prone to cuts as well:angry:, they didn't weigh much:smile:, and they rolled really well:smile:, but they weren't very robust:sad:

Well they are certainly easy to put on !
Made the whole bike a lot livelier - so much so that several screws & bolts that have been sound for years shook themselves loose in the course a 10 mile lunchtime ride. And I've realised I will probably have to service the hubs soon.
Overall though the first impression is: good for the price, and I might just have to get some for the hack bike too.
