hi all,

I've been saving up for a road bike for a while now, and looking out for deals. My budget - initially 400, but up to 500.

Suddenly two bikes previously out of my reach have dropped into my budget in the edinburgh coop sale; the giant scr 1.5 for £475 and the specialized allez sport for £500.

I've tried the scr 2 before and preferred the fit slightly to the allez 08 (not the sport) but my friends are saying the allez has much better components.

Is this true - TBH on paper they seem very similar to me.

I take it you're talking about the bikes on sale here?

TBH. there isn't much between them. they both come with Tiagra groupsets, own brand finishing kit, honest wheels.

Pick the one you like the colour of would be my advice.

they are both the same!!

Pretty much similar..but I'd go for the Giant as I like that one better...down to you in the end to which one you like best. You get pedals/toeclips with the Specialized one though, whereas with the Giant, you'd have to budget extra. Not a bad thing though as you'd probably upgrade to clipless anyway.

I did prefer the fit of the scr slightly better than the allez when I tried then before.

I'll probably order the scr 1.5 then - fit is more important than brand, so I'm told. (also a good price)

I would of thought they would slap some flats and straps on the Giant?
Is the Allez one of the bikes thats made by Giant? I know Giant make some Specialized frames, this could be one?
I'd go for Giant because i like Giants, thats about it though. See which one you think is prettier

Joe, you'd probably find that you'd have to pay extra for pedals with the Giant. If you read the spec, under pedals, it specifies N/A. This is because most people have their own specific preference when it comes to pedals...it also gets them around the pedal law.

Yup, same reason I'd go for the Giant...I like it over the Specialized one.

The SCR has a comfortable but upright riding position (A sort of all day plodder) where as the Allez always used to be (been several years since I had one) aimed at being an entry level racer. Arse up in the air, head down. Accelerates quickly but can feel harsh on rough roads.

It all depends on what you want.
Giant for comfort, Allez for speed.

I'm normally a fan of Giant fan too. However, I would have go for the Allez because I hated my SCR. I just couldn't get on with that stupidly long head tube and weird geometry.

Reading the usual bike press reviews, Specialized always get excellent comments. Never ever been keen on Giant to be honest. At the end of the day it all comes down to personal choice. I would always choose Spesh over Giant

There are plenty of road bikes here for under £500!

I've seen these - but no Giant, and the only other bikes within budget I've been able to ride have been the Allez and a Trek 1.5(sat on this only). I narrowed it down to these because of their consistent good reviews. The only other cycle I considered was a Ribble.

I did like the looks of the Trek, but I believe it has the lesser Sora groupset?

In any case I ordere the scr 1.5 cos I liked sitting on it more.

yh with trek u seem to have to pay mega bucks to get a descent groupset - (not saying that sora isnt) but having bout an scr2 with tiagra groupset i can see the advantage of them when riding on the drops for a length of time and also being able to put ur hands anywhere u want on the hoods

I bought a GT GTR series 4 a few months ago for £450 and I'm really happy with it. It has an alluminium frame, carbon forks, a compact chain ring, tiagra group set with sora shifters. I was on a really tight budget and as soon as I saw it I liked it. Also, one of the best things I've done was to join a local cycling club. They keep giving me loads of free/cheap hand me downs.....proper pedals, shoes (until I scraped enough to buy my own pair) handle bars, aerobars and loads of good advice. My only question to myself is, why did I was until I was 30 before I discovered road cycling?
