I've just heard a couple of snippets of Free Church psalm singing as part of a radio FDour report on the Church's decision to allow hymn singing and instruments in their churches.

What a fantastic sound. I'd love to listen to more.

I heard it too. I was hoping they wouldn't start singing hymns. Gaelic is a lovely sounding language. There's a bit of it in the animated film, The Illusionist. I seem to remember there was a bit of it in the film, "I know where I'm going", by Powell and Pressburger.

To me it's just a rather painful noise....however, I do recall some research which pointed to it being the basis if gospel music in the US.

Ah. Yes. All those Scots working at a non-supervisory level in the sugar trade.

Or perhaps Gospel originated with Black people?

Amazing Grace anyone?

(English, I believe)

As a big fan of "old timey"Amerian and Gospel music and its links with its Celtic I recall a documentary where the emmigrant Scots who managed or owned cotton plantations had tried to impose their religion on the black slaves by insisting they attended their church services hence the fusion. A Scots choir who still sang in the old style visited a church in the Southern States and sang their songs; the similarity with the resident gospel choir was remarkable. Well it interested me .....
