Hi one and all, I am new here so be gentle!
I am on the brink of buying a proper road bike (currently commuting on a GT transeo 3.0)
I have been offered a used Scott speedster s40 2009 for "make me an offer" but I think he will take £350.
The guy claims it's a carbon frame how can I tell? I have only found alloy frames under this bikes desciption on t'internet.

So does anyone rate this bike?
Is this a good deal?

Sorry for all the questions...

Cheers!

I may be wrong, but I would doubt very much that this is a cardon frame.

To the best of my knowledge the speedster range does not include a carbon frame.

This was my understanding from the research i have done.
So assuming it's alloy/alluminum is this a good deal?

If the vendor doesnt know what material the bike is made of it would set off alarm bells in my head as to how he aquired it.

I would say its a good price as the its fairly new and its about half the price of a new one. Obviously this is just an opinion as i have not seen the bike.

I would give it a test ride, and if your not clued up on your bikes take someone who is with you.

I know the guy and know it's not stolen. Karma!

Maybe it is the carbon fork issue mentioned by addictfreak; i shall ask him to elaborate!

Looks like a good bike for the money(Evans doing it new for £729)

If its been looked after go for it.(I know I would be tempted) At 9.3 kg its light enough. It annoys me when some manufacturers dont publish the weight as its a vital bit of info to compare with other bikes.

It is not carbon. I had a Scott S10 from 2006 and it is the same frame I think, altthough the range goes S40, S30, S20 S10 and mine is the most expensive with Ultregra kit. I sold it yesterday to someone I know for £350 as it happens.

It probably has carbon forks, and mine also had carbon seat stays. If the frame is the same as mine it is a bog standard aluminium one - fine but nothing exciting.

I would avoid buying it from the seller if only because he is possibly lying (and there may be other things he is lying about) !

I just looked at the link. It possible has a fake carbon paint job which may genuinely have confused him.
The RRP seems to be around £780. My experience of SCott was that it was badly overpriced. Mine had a an rrp of £1299 in Jan 2007 (2006 bike) and I paid £650! A deal with high quality kit.

That S40 looks like a good basic bike and if it fits you properly and is basically new, then I think £350 is a good price. If it is more secondhand then i would question it....
