Hi All,

Does anyone have any experience with Scott Seatposts? I have an '05 Sportster P2 and I'm having some issues with mine. Basically, I threaded the bolt. I've since replaced it with a more sturdy one, but then the nut threaded. The problem here is that I appear to have to *really* tighten things up far too much to avoid the seat post slipping. I'd kill for a seat clamp, but I see no way of using this with the Scott frame I have.

Any ideas?

Oh, this is the bike btw: http://www.bikepedia.com/QuickBike/BikeSpecs.aspx?Year=2005&Brand=Scott&Model=Sportster P2&Type=bike

First of all does it have the original seatpost in it?

Nextly, have you tried the next size up? My Jolly Expensive mountain bike is supposed to be a 26.8, the clamp secures the post ok but a 27 will actually fit. It shouldn't, and it only goes in a couple of inches but it's clearly a manufacturing issue.

Also, it appears to have some kind of stupid ass clamp system on it from the picture, Scott may have had warranty issues with it about which you are unaware. Worth taking to a Scott dealer methinks.

A too slack fit combined with a shiny anodised post, a rubbish clamp and a liberal coating of grease will all contribute to seatpost slippage. Lose the grease in the first instance. If still slips and is the right size for the frame rough up the post with some emery.

Cheers for the response, Mickle.

Yes, its the original seat post. My first concern at the moment is that there is currently no way of keeping the post up, so I guess I'll just have to find another sturdy bolt to keep it in place and hope I don't thread it! A shim might be an option until I get a replacement.

Anyway, trip to Evans on the way home to check about a warranty is in order. Longing to get back in the saddle, fed up of the Hammersmith and City ;)

Just a quick update in case someone else encounters this issue.

I replaced the bolt with the correct type from the Evans in Chiswick. It would have been free, but I asked for three (just in case, I'm doing LEJOG on this bike!) so there was a small charge.

Anyway after fitting this to the bike there was still some movement, and indeed the first one I put on there became threaded, the post is just too loose. I then tried to fit a 27mm seatpost in the LBS but this was too large, so I took a pair of scissors to a Coke can and cut a section of aluminium that I'm using as a makeshift shim and its been working perfectly for the last three weeks or so. Fingers crossed it'll keep me upright for the tour!
