Scott or Cube Cyclocross

After flogging the death out of my trusty old G-Zero for the past 2 weeks on a new commute, it's starting to show it's age (and mine) with the constant mileage building up and although the full sus is great off road, it eats energy on the road.

Even the paper girl overtook me last week

I would still like to be able to get out on the local tracks on a weekend, but looking for something that will also be a bit better for the 'on road' commute, without going down the full road bike route.

CX is looking like the answer and I'm torn between sticking with Scott, or trying Cube.

Over to the experts....

Sorry I don't know much about CX bikes, but I'm a big fan of Scotts as I have two myself. Having said that the Cubes are also a great buy, and you will get a little more for your money.
I see your in Durham. You should pop along to: http://infinity-cycles.co.uk/ you will be able to directly compare both makes.
If my mate Nev Martin if at work you will get some great advice from him.

Spooky !! I've just got back from Infinity, they're only 10 minutes away.

Didn't have any Cube CX bikes in and they probably won't have any until November, but I got sized for one of their Scott Comps which seem to be decent spec bikes, esp a 2011 which is now reduced.

Didn't catch the guys name, but he also mentioned that they are getting some Focus bikes in later next week and also some Ridleys (which I haven't heard of). He reckons that they are both very good makes and decent spec bikes.

Decisions, decisions.

Ridley and Focus are both spot on. I have a focus which I use for winter rides, it was my first Roadie and well worth the money. As for Ridley, a couple of lads in my club ride them and never heard any compliants from them.

I think the main point with Focus and Cube is that you get that bit extra for your money.

I was keen to buy on Monday as I've got the day off, but I might hang fire for the week and have a look at those when they come in.
A colleague is recommending Colnago, which are a bit more expensive, but also available locally.

Thanks to you all for taking the time to reply and I've decided to opt for a Cube.

I like the Boardmans, but unfortunately not the idea of using Halfords.

Put a deposit down this morning on the Cube Cross Race and confirmed the guy I met at the weekend was called Dave. They do seem to be a knowledgeable team and I'm looking forward to dealing with them. They're still in the process of building their website, so it's not fully functioning at the moment.

Ridley are Belgian, I think they were actually pioneers in the whole CX thing? My LBS sells them too

The staff at Infinity mentioned Ridley as being a big name in the CX world and that they were good bikes.

Can't add much re Ridley CX bikes, but my new Ridley road bike (Excalibur) certainly cuts the mustard. That said I also own a Cube and that is excellent too. They are indeed big names in the CX world and produce good TT bikes also. Next door neighbour has Ridley Phaeton TT bike and is pleased with it. probably couldn't go wrong with either Cube or Ridley.
