I am doing a long distance charity ride next year and would like to bring up the old debate once again regarding tyre choice.
I shall be riding with my stock tyres until just before the event, before purchasing my new ones. I was set on getting gators but was wondering if anyone has used or currently riding with Schwalbe Laguno's. Both puncture resistant or whatever they call it.
Thoughts please......

Luganos are Schwalbe's basic road tyre- never used them but they can't be up to much. Durano Plus are what you want for big miles and puncture resistance. Excellent grip in wet or dry conditions and as tough as old boots.

Yep definitely Durano Plus. I rode LEL on them this year. I had one puncture in 900 miles that was due to a nail. I didn't notice any cutting up at all on the tyres (they are now on my commuting bike) although the rear did wear with the weight of my saddlebag (coupled with my weight obviously). I also used them for a solo ride from London to Lancashire last year and if I was going out on a long ride on my own wouldn't consider any other tyre tbh.

I had Lugano's for a year without any punctures but some of the guys above do many miles and that counts for something on an issue like this, so Durano Plus sounds good.
As with any parts, I would advise you to put them on before the event and ride them so they have been tested and proved (or corrected / fine tuned if required).
Enjoy the event.

I should have remembered to say that. Always allow yourself a while before an event to go out on the bike with it setup exactly how you're going to have it in the event. Half way into a long charity ride is not the time to find out something's not right.

I have trashed a standard 25c Durano tyre within 200km of being fitted, never had an issue with gatorskins although I hear they tend to suffer in areas where there is a lot of flint on the roads.

I used to use Luganos and never suffered a puncture, and thought the grip and wear rate was acceptable .
The only reason I changed them was because coloured stripe wasn't concentric and made the wheels appear to be buckled.

There's nothing unusually special about Schwalbe tyres and the Lugano is a fairly ordinary tyre in any case. Lots of other ordinary tyres also offer good puncture protection, like the Rubino Pro or Conti Gatorskin. With any tyre, you pay your money and you take your choice - and hope for the best

Not a fan of Lugano's TBH. I'm currently using the pair that came with my bike as a stopover until I get better tyres (I had been using Vredstein tricomps prior to that). They don't grip at all well in the wet, Puncture protection isn't bad but I've only used them for about 400 miles or so and they're looking pretty beaten up already. Spend more, you'll be thankful when you're not having to change a tube and it's tipping it down on a freezing February day. FWIW, I've got Continental grand prix 4 seasons on their way.

That's what I swapped my Luganos for, and got a puncture on the first outing

As it was a pinch puncture, I can happily blame either the stone or the inner tube, and not the tyre  The Fortezza Tricomps are a vastly better tyre anyhoo

The tricomps are a nice tyre, I had been using mine all through the summer without any problems but I think a combination of wear (well into 4 figures mile-wise), road conditions getting worse during the Autumn and I'm not the most graceful or light weight rider meant a spate of punctures. So I swapped them for the Luganos as a temporary measure, and they don't hold a candle to the tricomps. I'm hoping the incoming GP 4 seasons justify their pricetag .

Now I really, really hated GP 4 Seasons. Talk about high maintenance, you really have to check them after every wet ride or you're in trouble ime. If you do get a puncture it seems to be a tiny thing that's worked its way through and is really hard to find particularly in the wet and dark of a winter ride. The cost made me even more unhappy. I've been on rides with others using GP4 Seasons and I haven't seen anything to make me think they are puncture resistant.
