Schwalbe Ultremo R1 sidewall problem

Is this tyre going to fail on me? This line goes all the way around the tyre, both sides and on both front and rear tyres. The tyres are about 400miles old, bought in May and show no other wear

That looks nasty! there a loose fibres showing in your picture. I'd guess they had been run soft, very soft. Or the brake blocks have been rubbing the tyre wall. Possibly a manufacturing fault, but hard to prove unless others using that tyre can produce similar pictures.

Personaly, I wouldn't run that tyre.

Worth sending it back to Schwalbe, as there has been a documented weakness in some R1 batches, so you may get something from them. I had to bin an R1 after a similar mileage to yours, but out of sheer laziness didn't send to Schwalbe. Ironically, it's stablemate fitted to the front at the same time, is still looking good as new after a 1000 odd miles.

Nothing to worry about. I've had tyres that have looked like that for hundreds or even thousands of miles; what you are seeing is the ragged edge of part of the textile that is laid up in layers to build the carcass. The warp (or weft, not sure which) has begun to come away, which makes it look even worse. Unsightly but not an issue.

I have had two sets of R1 tyres go this way, send them back to where you got them and ask for a different tyre eg Schwalbe RX or Continental GP4000S
