I have Schwalbe Road Cruiser tyres on my Cube hybrid bike but would like to change them to Schwalbe Marathon Plus Tyres for Puncture resistance. They nearest size I can get to my existing tyres is 700x38c (700x40c HS377 are my old size). Will they fit ok.

Depends on your rim size but probably.

Are you sure you want to go M+ instead of the much softer ordinary marathons?

Yes they will fit, but only if you fit them like this.

Check your wheel before fitting for protruding spoke heads, sharp edges at the valve hole and fit quality rim tape (Velox) and new, decent inner tube.

Honestly there is nothing to defend against hawthorn barbs, they will puncture any tyre I bet. However by avoiding hedges at clipping time, I've been rolling with Schwalbe road plus (700X32) for nearly a year with a 1000 miles plus on the clock without incident,

I agree about thorns, and unfortunately, the thicker the tyre the more difficult they are to dig out. I recently had to throw away a marathon that still had thousands of miles left in it because I wasn't able to cleanly extract a thorn. I've now added a pair of tweezers to my saddlepack toolkit.

I've used normal Schwalbe Marathons for 20 years, they are tough as old boots, you probably don't need the Plus version unless you ride through loads of broken glass every day.
Thanks for that. I think i'll follow the general advice given and buy a couple of ordinary Marathon tyres instead of the 'plus' ones. I take it that there is little difference between the sizes 400x40 & 400x38.

I use the Marathon Plus Had one puncture in 12 months and once you get the hang of changing them its pretty easy. never had any grip problems with them and I cycle all year round a great tyre imo

The wider the tyre, the less likely it is to puncture.

Your tyres are relatively wide, which is another reason why ordinary Marathons should do the job.

Unfortunately it is not quite that simple!

Not all 700 tyres and rims are compatible

The best way of sizing tyres are what are called the European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation (ERTRO) sizing

For many years there was a difference in tyre sizes, a 26"x1" tyre fits a rim with a diameter of 609 mm and a 26" x 2.125" tyre would fit a 673 mm rim

In oter words two 26" tyres, but with a difference in diameter of almost 3 inches!

The 700 series ae the same with a 700 x 18c and a 700 x 47 c having a difference of over 2 inches

So the idea was to have a tyre size that stated clearly the diameter of the tyre the format being xx-yyy

The important measurement is the three figure number as this is the diameter. It is the rim diameter, and if this number matches the rim then it will fit

The second number is the width of the tyre and can be varied

For instance on a fast commuter a "28" would work as a narrow fast tyre, and a "57" would be a wide tyre that would work better off road and offer more comfort
