Got a puncture on the back the other day, went to repair it, the innertube is like swiss-cheese, decided it's best to replace the tube
I'm backed up with work for a while so sent my old dear to get a new one.

She's gone and got Presta valves, my wheels take Schrader and I can't get hold of her to get her to go swap them over.

If I use the prestas in my wheels is it going to be ok or do I need to wait till I get the schraders (meaning i won't be riding it now till sunday)?

Are there any pitfalls to prestas? My wheels say to inflate to 75psi, I heard somewhere prestas don't like high presure pumps?

You should have no problems at all. Never heard that about Presta valves. Doubt it's true as road bikes use them.

I've never bought the theory that Schrader valves can't handle high pressure. A lorry wheel has a Schrader valve and they run at 110-120psi. That is more than high enough for normal road riding.

so long and short of it, these Presta ones should be alright, they are not going to rattle around in the schrader holes, comprimise strenght, be at risk of puncturing in the schrader wheels, nothing like that??

Put them in, pump them up and ride as normal with no worries?

Yup, should be fine, as long as your pump can handle Presta.

You can get things to shove into the valve hole, which reduces the hole size from schrader to presta.
Your LBS should stock them.
I'd imagine you that you get some inner tube creep and end up with the presta valve coming out of a schrader-sized hole at a wonky angle.

ok cool. these lugs you speak of, can they go in while the wheel/tube is asembled? Or only while it's all in bits?
Also my wheels are double walled, does that make any odds?

There's Schrader valves and there's Schrader valves... I'm pretty sure the ones designed for lorries don't have exactly the same internals as those on a Barbie bike. Though happy to be proved wrong. The trouble - in my experience - of putting high pressures into Schrader equipped tubes is that they can be a bugger to get the air into. You have to put more pressure in to overcome the additional back pressure of the spring. With prestas, as soon as the hose pressure matches the internal pressure the valve opens up. Like I say, happy to be proved wrong, I'm just something of a valve snob...

I've never noticed any difference.

The linked Sheldon Brown article is fine but it's dated 2002. In recent times I've not had a presta valve that doesn't have removable innards (and I've discovered that Schraeder ones do as well )

The adaptors for putting Presta valves in Schraeder holes were 10p for a pack of 4 when I bought some a couple of years back, and they'll fit from either side. Fitted from the outside they needed the round nut that I usually throw away to be screwed down to make sure they stayed in.

Guys I just got home and had a look and I'm getting a bit confused if I have the right size innertube here

On my tire it says - (37-622) 28 x 1 5/8 x 1 3/8

New tube says the following - 700 x 32 to 38C/27 x 1 1/4 , also , 32x38x622mm / 32x630

So is this ok or not? Why all the wierd f*****g numbers?! lol
