Is there any way to save a search and get alerts when a matching post/thread pops up?

For example, I often search for "liverpool" in case anyone's after directions or wants to go for a local ride, and it'd be great if that could be done automatically.

No, sorry, that's not an option with the software we use.

How about using Google alerts to do it instead?
