Is there such an app or software for the iPhone? Which allows you to follow a set route in real time, that keeps your current position on the screen in front of you. I've used cycle apps but your position goes off the section of map that is on the screen, and have to move the map manually to see where you are on the route.

Nav free is good, but isn't it just a Wikipedia for SatNav? In that it relies on users updating it and therefore is unreliable.

Food for thought.

Runkeeper - it's fantastic! You can set up routes very easily, which you can follow in real time on it's built in gps map. It will also give you current speed, overall speed, distance and calories burnt. It's also a general exercise app that can be used for multiple sports (Inc obviously cycling)

Oh...and you position on the map is always in the middle with the map moving around your position. So basically, you will never travel off the map

Ive looked at navfree but I wanted to upload a route to it of my own and then be able to follow it. I cant do that via this app.

+1 on navfree, if you don't mind it telling you what route you will be taking! Although it will recalculate the route it you go off it's plan, I agree that there are times when I really wish I could 'draw' a route in it. You get what you pay for I suppose!

I've tried run keeper this morning on the way into work, seems pretty good I've used about five different apps now. I'll have to try and do a route and follow it, I guess you use the website to do that. It's a pitty you couldn't upload a gpx file of a route as I have a few created on other cycling apps. I've switched routes between motion x and cyclemeter before now.

Runkeeper does accept gpx files....But yes, you need to do that though a browser, idealy on a mac or a pc. Once they are uploaded, and you have created some routes, they are uploaded to your phone instantly, and are avalable untill you remove them from your runkeeper account.
