Hi,
I have been given a set of Nova wheels. I don't know their history or how much they have been used so I looked for wear markers. There is an arrow pointing to a safety line.

I have enclosed (hopefully) a photo showing the arrow. Is the line near it the safety line or just a scratch on the rim.

Thanks!

Thanks for your opinions folks. I know about the brake pads- the whole bike is coming apart - new project....

Take the tyre off and look inside the rim at the position shown by the arrow. You might see a blind hole milled into the rim. When you can see daylight through it, it's time for a new rim.

Are the very fine lines running parallel on the brake surface not put there by the manufacturer? They look almost brand new to me......

Great advice thanks. The wheels came off a Raleigh road bike I bought for a fiver! They are going onto an old Peugeot frame I've got. They are quite marked- done a few miles but looks like they have a few left.

Spot on - but get them pads down. you'll end up blowing them needlessly, and you only have 2/3 of the pad breaking on the rim.

Those are the machining marks on the nearly new rim, and will wear off in due course. Rims get machined to smooth out the joint after (unnecessary) welding, and to reduce brake squeal on new rims.

When the rim has reached its wear limit, you'll get a slot in the middle of the sidewall, like on this Sputnik.
