Every so often I get lumps or spots in my groin which can be a bit painful. Sometimes they get ahead like a spot but not always. They are lump rather than a sore. I know you can cysts but these usually disappear after time. Any ideas what these might be and any treatment

Could be ingrowing hair follicles.

My go-to treatment for any such sore is Sudocrem.

Yes I’m rather hairy and I’ve used both your suggestions before after rides. However any ideas to get rid of the lumps. I’ve had Mrs W squeezing them or sticking a needle In them in past with limited success.

I get them on the most load-bearing bits of my arse occasionally... either just sore skin from abrasion or I think irritated / infected hair follacles which sound more like what you describe.

They tend to be quite deep and take a long time to develop to the point where they can be drained, which is never fun or easy but quite satisfying after a week of misery if having no choice but to ride.

Research, gut feeling and experience suggests that keeping the area clean is likely to prevent infection (frequent changes of underwear, showering soon after getting back), while applying vaseline helps with the abrasion / irritation either as a preventative or remedial measure.

I've tried Sudocrem but the jury's out - seems I'm very sensitive to most skin treatments and think the lubricating nature of vaseline trumps the antibacterial action of the Sudocrem.

I also find that once developed sticking masking tape over them significantly lessens the abrasion-related discomfort.

I think kecks in a more breatheable / anti-microbal fabric such as wool or bamboo would probably be a good idea to reduce the potential for them to develop in the first place.

I've had issues occasionally- there's no one cause (GCN did a rather helpful look at sores a while back). I think most of mine have been either abrasion or shorts causing pimples/spots. I have tried Sudocrem, bought a pot after a forum Dun Run in 2010 was somewhat excruciating. Unfortunately, it made the problem worse. Sudocrem has lots of good properties for treating sores, but it's not a moisturiser- quite the reverse, as medical professionals told me (it set back my recovery). Back in 2015 or so, I bought a tub of this (unfortunately it only now seems to be available from its native New Zealand- Wiggle stocked it back then), and it's been a life saver when I've needed it, like on tour a couple of years ago. Consistency much like vaseline, thankfully without the same smell, antibacterial properties, effective at minimising discomfort. You'll probably want one of the many excellent alternatives. @wafter has nailed the key thing: hygiene down there. That, and moisturising if need be. I got a tub of Neutrogena for tours, E45 or equivalent lotions will do the same job and of course cheaper.

Like greeting whilst cycling, this topic rears up from time to time.

Have a look at my explanation in this old post.

What you are describing is the perfect ischemic sore, which cannot be treated by topical muthi.

Thanks for posting the link. As said above I’ve had these from time to time however the link has given a clue to why they have appeared in the last week. I have done 2 longish rides 78 miles and 95 miles but with faster riders. So I’ve probably been more on “ the rivet” than usual. So it looks Mrs W might be getting the needle out at some point.😉
