Saddle choice

Hi

Started commuting 5 days a week on my hybrid bike - it's a Cannondale Quick CX3.
Stock saddle is the Cannondale 'Ergo' saddle (like this http://www.bicyclebuys.com/seats/SeatComfort/0120039).

I have adjusted it on the rails about 2/3 forward to get knee over pedal spindle (as measured by my plumb bob) and it allows me to sit further back to the wider bit of the saddle. I have adjusted post height to get maximum leg extension without moving hips, and also angled it up to to allow me to sit on the wider back part without sliding forward.

I've done 1400 miles on it so it's not bad, and since moving it forward a few 100 miles ago I have increased my efficiency and average speed, but I still feel that the back of the saddle isn't supportive enough. I have to tip the nose up to stop me sliding forward off the wider back bit onto the narrow bit, but then the nose puts pressure on my soft tissues.

Now I'm buying saddles on eBay for a few quid a time, to experiment with styles.

For my first attempt I just bought a large sprung comfort saddle, but that was actually much much worse! When I was in my riding position I was unable to slide back enough to the wide area with the 'sit bumps', due to saddle clashing with inner thigh. Clearly this would only suit a 90 degree, low power riding position. That's on the 'resell pile' now.

I note the Cannondale saddle has a smooth swept back, a bit like this Charge Spoon that people recommend. But perhaps I should look for ones with two raised bumps at the back to sit on?

Maybe I need a saddle with a larger back end, but stays narrow right until the back then goes wide quickly, to give room for my thighs...does this exist? Perhaps I should consider a womans saddle?

I will be carrying on with 'saddle sampling' but if anyone has any ideas of ones to look out for, please do reply.

If the Charge Spoon is not good then you could try a very flat saddle or a Brooks saddle.

If you haven't measured your sit bones yet then I would recommend that you did.

A flat saddle like this maybe

Here is some info on Brooks saddles

FTFY as I don't swear by mine. I swear at the horrid thing ;)

Theres always one. ^_^ I put a charge spoon on my fixed just before xmas, it was a bit of a bugger to set up, but once I got it right it became very comfortable.

Sorry to be a fly in the ointment , but I just can't get mine configured right. I've even started using this after rides to ease the pain..........

Seriously though, I've not given up on it yet, but that's largely as I can't be mithered finding an alternative ;)

I shall persist

Most people (not all) that use Brooks Saddles are very happy with them once they have been 'worn in'. I've never used one but I have a Fi'z.ik on two of my bikes and find them very good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd echo the advice to get your sitbones measured. As they come in different widths, most people can find a Specialized saddle to suit. I have one on my tourer, which is my most used bike. My next most used bike has a Spoon, which has been good for commuting and long day rides.

A lot of people love Brooks, but a lot of folk (me definitely included) find them absolute agony. A Brooks saddle almost put me off cycling altogether.

Before I lost weight my spoon was a nightmare. I've lost 37lbs in a year and now I find it a bit wide and seem to fit the harder, narrower charge knife perfectly. I put this down to the fact that I had too much of my own padding! This was pressuring the soft tissues around my sit bones too much.

Also don't forget that a GOOD quality pad is essential!

By using the 'tin foil on carpeted step assometer' method, centre to centre of sitbone impressions 11 - 11.5 cm when leaning forward in cycling position. Hopefully I am normal. But my wife wasn't sure I was normal any more when she just saw me doing this...

Well I might see if a spoon comes up on ebay, if any of the few spoon-haters are selling them.
No recs on saddles for large thighs?

Its interesting to read on this thread about how some people love their spoons and some hate them, it illustrates just how individual and personal saddle choice is, theres no one fits all, we are all different in what we need from a saddle.
