Any recommendations? I have a rack and pannier usually but thought that if I'm just going for a ride and don't need to carry anything other than tools and a jacket then I'd use a saddle bag.

It would be useful to be able to clip a light to it too.

I have had a look at the Carradice Barley, but apparently it sags if there's not much in it.

Is it a problem if it sags when you have a rack to prevent it pressing on your wheels / guards?

What about a Carradice Super C saddlepack rather than a saddlebag. 7 litre capacity, which is enough to carry most things you'll need. It's what I use for 300km plus events and carries jacket, tools, jerseys, arm warmers, food, and other bits and pieces.

You mean this one;

It does look like it would do... Not as nice looking as the Barley tho' . Mmmm, my b'day is the end of the month so I'll be having to drop a few hints....

That's the one. And, no, it's not as nice as a Barley. If I had the choice I would go for the Barley. But you seem to think there is a problem with it sagging...

<I reckon a Barley would be just the ticket...>

Right, I've gone for the Carradice Barley. Cheapest I could find it for was £34.95 (£31.45 plus £3.50 P&P) from Bike+ Online. Never used them before but I saw the familiar photo of Paul Smith on the homepage so figured they must be okay. Thought I'd also get a Minoura swing grip (look, I've always wanted one okay!), as they had one slightly cheaper than Wiggle.
So that is an early b'day present to myself (and my expenses cheque blown). Now I've got to find an ingenious way of hiding it from Mr Plax for as long as possible.......... He has eagle eyes and rumbles me everytime

Okay then, my Carradice Barley has arrived. My first impressions were "wow, it's a bit bigger than I thought", and "wow, it was handmade by Patricia!". Seriously it is handwritten in biro on the inside label.

I've attached it via the saddle loops, and the seat post. I've managed to get a mini pump, couple of bungee cords, long fingered gloves, waterproof trousers, overshoes and skull cap in the main compartment. The water bottle went in there too, mainly to see if I could get my lunch in there. Pretty certain it can, and I think I can get a waterproof jacket in there too.
In the two pockets at the side went my clip on lights, tyre levers, multi tool and p*ncture repair kit. Oh, and spare batteries.

It will be a faff for taking on and off though. I just leave the pannier on the bike and take out my lunch when I get to work (secure area). So it won't bother me, but if you have to take it off everytime then one of the quick release options are a must. I mean an opportunistic thief won't be interested in it as they'd have to open the bag and try and unbuckle it to get it off. Not a quick job, and I doubt your bog standard chav would know how one is secured to the bike. Somebody looking to steal one to "order" will probably have off with it though.

So pretty much can get what I want into it. It does look huge on the bike though. I'm hoping it won't hit the back of my legs as it overlaps either side of the saddle by a few inches.

Overall impressions are very good. I'm quite pleased. Something smaller might be more suitable if you just wanted to carry tools though.

Not tested out the waterproofness of it yet obviously, but it looks the bizz. Not sure about the side pockets though, they don't look very secure.

There isn't usually much of a problem with water getting into saddlebags as your body keeps most of the rain off (you do have mudguards don't you?)

If you find the bag touching the back of your legs, you can replace the seatpost strap with a longer one (eg toestrap) threaded through a 4-5" section of plastic pipe. This should push the bag back far enough to clear your legs.

this one

in large is pretty cavernous.
I bought one for commuting and it's actually too big for me, i'd let you have it but i'd probably use it for audaxes.

if you want to use one of the clip on topeak ones you'll need one of these
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=11299
which i've got one of if you want 'cos i don't like the clip ons any more after one failed on me, but i would say that you can probably see when the rail on the bag itself has half worn away and send it back. but the rail does wear away which will cause it to fail.

Got my Carradice Nelson Longflap from Bike+. They were brilliant!!

Carradice rock!

I've got what I think is a Pendle, similar to the Barley, (no metal loops on top of bag) and I have only used it twice but love it. Must put my classic Mansfield saddle on my Orange Clockwork (?????) it has bag loops.

A simple solution to carrying stuff when on the bike is to get one of those calico bags that are around just now, stuff everything in that and then just take it with you, remembering to take out tools etc from side pockets.

You could always use one of those plastic thingies, oh yes a cable tie (a reusable preferably) to further secure bag, any potential thieves may not know you can get them.

I'm still trying to decide whether to keep mine (it's a lovely green colour) as it's been so little used. I love Carradice stuff. I've got Vaude waterproof panniers but still prefer the cotton duck.

LOL, I forgot I posted this. Over a year on and I'm still well chuffed with my Barley. Not let me down once. I've got an SQR system for it now which is ideal for taking it on and off the bike, and I've started to use it as my main commuting bag (I can get all sorts into in folded up properly).
Only upsetting bit is where it has rubbed over time against the pannier rack (I have a tubus cargo rack and there are two bits that stick out at the top), it has worn the bottom of the Barley in two little scetions. Thankfully they've put another patch of material at the bottom of the Barley so it hasn't worn through the bag. I've duck taped the bottom to prevent any further rubbing.
