A helmet is designed to protect you at low speeds. So at higher speeds it may do absolutely nothing to help you.

Amulree to Kenmore road, via Glen Quaich, lovely road but has some pretty extreme gradients especially on the Kenmore side.
Sad news.

I'm always suspicious of reports like this because there was no apparent cause to them falling off.
Many cyclist have died because of a heart attack or stroke before they hit their head. A helmet wouldn't have saved them.

I cycled that road earlier this year and its pancake flat at first but it then goes very sharply up and even sharper down towards Kenmore, my first guess would be unfortunately they lost control on the descent but that is only a guess.

There's a clue in the bit where it says he died after suffering a serious head injury. Maybe it wasn't the actual cause of death, but it couldn't have helped much.

Many trauma victims suffer injuries which they are capable of surviving, but die from something as simple as a lack of an airway (fact) the actual cause of death being hypoxia to name just one. I doubt very much if the PM has taken place yet never mind an inquest. The press report is assuming because he had a head injury, that it was the cause of death which is not necessarily so.
