I heard about this from someone in work that saw them go up Kingsway. Tagging this topic to find out myself!

I've heard it was the Dellotie Ride Across Britain (John O'Groats to Land's End).

It seems some of them came into Liverpool, I didn't see them but others seen them on Queens Drive Fiveways. Apparently they stopped off at Aintree.

Looking at the route on the website they went well out of their way!

I noticed "cycle event" signs in Gatacre on my commute in the week but they might be left over from the Manchester-Liverpool ride a few weeks back.
