If you haul into Barnsley Market next Tuesday you will find last year's road atlases for a couple of pounds; or try the Pound Shops in Market Street. I find it much easier to plan routes from those than on screen.

Given that you are 'new to cycling' you need to get hold of someone locally who a) does know about cycling and  has organised a multi-day charity event.

Do you have any contacts there?

For experience cyclists I don't see a problem with that route. A lot of people hate the A618 between Rotherham and Swallownest. I also think the A633 is a fast route but very, very grotty and unenjoyable as a road and can get chocked full of traffic at the wrong time. I'd route through Kiveton Park, Harthill and Whitwell Common, Nether Langwith.

you've obviously not been on the A618 for a while. it now has a shared cycle/foot path all the way along from whiston to swallownest and so it's really safe for cyclists. the hill coming out of whiston is a bit of a bugger though!

I thought the cycle path only ran for a quarter of a mile linking the two bits of the sustrans route on the A618. If they've added a bit more on the uphill bit of the 618 then that's quite good for hopping off in rush hour.

it now goes from whiston at the bottom of the steep hill right past ulley res. and through to anston. great safe way to get between the two and when i occasionally commute on the bike, to kiveton park, i use this route now.
