I am looking at getting a complete set of spare wheels for my gravel bike for when I venture off road, rather than swapping tyres over, plus I have relatively expensive wheels on it at present.

So I will be needing 2 140mm rotors. There are plenty on eBay cheap, they don't state if they are MTB or road, I'm guessing it doesn't matter as it's just a plate of metal, can someone just confirm that is the case.

Anything wrong with cheap rotors, the ones I'm looking at are Promax, my hydraulic system is Shimano, any compatibility issues?
Many thanks

Rotors are rotors - just check they are compatible with your mounts - 6 bolt or centrelock. Some cheap rotors are labelled as not suitable for sintered pads

Promax items, in my experience, are cheap and nasty.

However, a cheapo rotor is less likely to cause a problem then a cheapo component elsewhere in the brake.

Isn't the bigger question getting the correct fitting for the rotor to the wheel?

I'm no expert, but I understand there are at least two types of fittings.

Shimano call their one Centrelock, due to patents - often the case with Shimano - other brands of discs may not be compatible.

My advice is get the shimano ones recommended with your brakes or better. The cheap ones are often of poorer materials and finish quality. Shimano ones are fit and forget. I have mountain bike rotors on my gravel bike , 160mm.
