My feeling in the last 2 editions was that the peloton was a bit scared to attack because they couldn't really estimate yet how hard the new parcours was.
(and attacking too early would/could be too dangerous)
I did have the feeling though that the second edition, already had more attacks before the last (the 3rd) Kwaremont-Paterberg loop. The best example thereof was that Roelandts attacked and (because he was a bit ahead) was therefore the only one who managed to survive Cancellara and Sagan's acceleration on the Kwaremont.
(and in that way managed to take 3rd place)
So my assumption would be that if they hadn't changed it, people would feel more and more comfortable with this parcours anyway (and we would have seen more fireworks anyway)
Actually... changing it again, might have the same effect as 2 years ago
(And in all fairness in both "Oudenaarde" editions it were the strongest riders who could clearly seperate them from the rest)
That being said...the new parcours seems to have the enthousiasm of a lot of prominent cyclists, so I guess they must have wanted some changes as well.
(and are happy with the proposed ones)
