So yesterday morning I am doing my normal ride into work, its only 4 miles but always a pleasant way to start and finish the day! Yesterday, im less than a mile into the jouney so still half asleep :-) when I hit the cycle bridge, fine going up, I use the speed coming down to get upto cruising speed for the rest of the trip. Only yesterday, they had dug up the road at the bottom of the bridge, its a slight left turn, no problem normally, clear view, except if the obstacle 'is on the floor'! As I hit the exit, there in the road is a fallen over plastic barrier....I remember using the F word, I had no way of avoiding it so went for the only thing i could think of...pick the front wheel up and try and jump it....im pleased to say, i made it over....but it was a close call! All I could do was smile and carry on!

Today, there are signs warning people, im wondering if I wasnt the only one that had a near miss! :-)

If I had gone down im thinking a law suit would have been pending!! :-)

Putting signs out costs money. Other people always seem to want them. And if they're metal, some seem to think they have a high scrap value.
Problem with barriers is they tend to get blown over too easy, or knocked over for a bit of fun.

I have yet to see any roadworks, not on a motorway, that have been signed and coned in line with legal regulations.
I did a course on road works signage many years ago when working for BT. It's a very convoluted process to sign any road works properly. It could take the best part of a day to set things out in accordance with the law, just to do a 5 minute job by the edge of the road. It's no wonder corners get cut.
If ever you have an accident involving road works, make sure you photograph where the signs and cones were placed - I'd almost guarantee they weren't set out in the required legal manner.

Not far from you the Coton cycle path bridge over the M11, the ramps up and over have been cracked for years, some filled, some not.
The entrance onto the bridge is interesting as its not level either.
None of it is bad enough to harm you, but this week they've put 2 "uneven surface" signs on easels that constrict the ramps.

it takes the best part of a day on big projects , smaller stuff not so much. the changes in 2009 helped. before that it was an utter ballache.

when you do it all the time it gets quicker and easier. I hated doing the NRSWA supervisors course just so we could work on street lighting columns. .

what I tend to see more often is the " cycle lane closed" "Cyclists dismount" Cyclists dismount and use footway" bollix , which in London ( not sure elsewhere) breaches road works guidance. The guidance asks you to create a safe lane through works.

Not sure you stand a chance or suing. Basic principal of cycling/driving is travel at a speed in which you can stop within the distance you can see. I get it was in the floor but even still.

That damn bridge is part of my commute and they've been putting obstacles at one end for months now. I can't work out what they're doing apart from cutting down some trees. I've given up using it completely and go a different route as it's such a pain so haven't seen the road being dug up. Can you imagine them mostly blocking a key road in Cambridge for drivers for months on end? No me neither!

I had this driving home last night. Somebody had gone through and scattered all the barriers and cones from the local gas main repairs across the road. Annoying at 11pm having to clear the road so that I can carry on home.
