Having recently come back to cycling in the Capital after a couple of years away the one thing that has really REALLY blown me away isn't the bad drivers its the truly appalling state of the roads.

Has this happened because of austerity and there's no money for repairs or TPTB think that it's acceptable?

Anyone care to comment on the state of the roads in your area?

Fairly ropey although Durham County Council seem to be doing their best with limited resources. A lot of patch and hope rather than strip down the top surface and redo. They also seem to be resorting to sections of tar and chippings on tarmac roads that are breaking up, rather than multi-patching.

Some are really bad and some not so, the funding for most of he roads I ride is from local council, I do some A roads where it's split between local and central Government funding, but there no difference again some good some bad.

We've had a lot of this, this year, it doesn't help as within weeks the irregular surface just shows as the surface settles/compressed by traffic and is just as bad, because the pot holes are much more difficult to see with the uniformity of the colour of the surface.

Yes, my feeling too. Frankly the last two winters knocked our roads about something rotten. Now if you go to Darlington they have had the worst roads in the region for the last 25 years, to my personal knowledge. They do seem to find lots of money for re-jigging junctions from simple traffic lights or roundabouts into an horrendous amalgam of both with counter-intuitive lanes and totally unnecessary waiting at lights in quiet traffic conditions. They are also supposed to be a cycling town, one of the first tranche, although apart from a few new stretches of off, as in alongside, road routes and a bit of paint it is hard to see much difference. AND we still see painted lanes ending just where you'd like a cycle reserved area at choke points.

I think the roads pretty much everywhere have deteriorated quite badly due to the last two hard winters and lack of funds. There has been a bit of patching around here and the very occasional totally new surface where it feels amazing to ride on but these are few and far between. I have one uphill section that is so broken up that if I stand up in the pedals when climbing it, the back of the bike hops around all over the place.

I just ride with the traffic, I personally think the painted lanes on a road do nothing, it driver and cyclist awareness we need to be working on, most drivers are pretty good.

Ditto, like being on a space hopper.
