I've had my new bike for a little while now and have appreciated the (mainly) decent weather. However, the bike came with Vittoria Zaffiro slicks and even a novice like me knows that they won't be much good in the wet (not fun in the odd wet day I've gone out in so far).

Can anyone recommend a good tyre for Autumn and Winter? Having a quick look on Google etc and Continental Gatorskins seemed to be rated.

Thanks in advance!

Gatorskins are a bit of a love them or hate them tyre.

Personally, I thought they rolled well and were v. durable, but less than confidence inspiring in the wet.

Before building my tourer (which runs on Vredestein Perfect Max, £2 from a local jumble sale) my winter tyres were Michelin Pro Race 2 in 25c. Less durable than the gators (although I p*nctured about as much) but very reassuring grip wise. I liked the wire on Schwalbe Stelvio in 25c too.

I use Michelin Pro Race (1's?) and they are very good grip -wise as John says. As someone mentioned in answer to a similar question, the grooves in a bike tyre don't actually help much in the wet so I keep the slicks on and just let a bit of pressure out to increase the contact area.
