Hi,

I've just acquired an old road bike and I am looking for pleasant, quiet, circular routes on smoothish roads, starting near Whitley Bay. Any suggestions, for routes or for places to look for them?

I stayed in Seaton Burn recently for the Northern Rock cyclone and did a 30-mile route from Seaton Burn out to Whitley Bay. Joined the coast road by the big roundabout before you get into Blyth, up to Whitley Bay, then back again.

Very agreeable and brought back lots of childhood memories of my hols up there!

Hi, from a fellow Whitley Bay cyclist ... well, at least soon to be one !!

I had a Carlton road bike for years, having been a birthday present as a teenager. I then got a second hand Raleigh Equipe, from another W/bay chap, about 10 years ago, basically for whizzing around W/Bay.

As a kid, I regularly rode to The Delaval Arms, Holywell Dene, Earsdon, Monkseaton Drive and back home ..,. thinking this was the perfect route. At 12, it probably was.

That bike lasted quite a few years, but has seen better days and would need a fair bit of work to get it back in shape (probably like me!).

Looking after my elderly father with Alzheimer's has given me little time recently, but I have been thinking of getting a new bike, to get fit again, even if only at weekends when my father is in respite.

Still looking on the internet etc and deciding what bike to buy. Being 51 and my last new bike, the Carlton was for my 12th birthday, I think I deserve a new one this time (let's just hope my wife agrees)

Anyway, I got a local map from the library the other day which shows cycle routes.

HAPPY CYCLING !!!

Ye gods, my old childhood stomping ground...

Loads of places to cycle round there - just get the OS Landranger out, decide on a route using the minor roads and go for it.
