hi all, ive got sora brakes on my specialized road bike, but when i am looking at buying new pads most of them seem to just be the pads with no mounting parts? the pads i have currently bolt onto the breaks, do i need to buy special pads to start off with to keep replacing them with these inserts?

You will need the holders, yes. And you'll notice the difference in stopping power.

I use Clarks CPS240 which come with a holder plus a spare set of pads for about £10. Just remember to remove/loosen the little screw on the holder or you won't be able to replace them.

Others recommend Swisstop. It's personal choice.

I like the look of them Chain reaction have them for £7 in white , i might get a pair for the boardman as the bikes white and the original pads are poor .

I'm using the Clarks pads on the Defy. They are massively better than the original pads which turned into a black goo in the rain and disappeared

+1 for clarks. I bought some for my boardman to replace the dreadful stock ones. Excellent brakes, and came with a replacement set of cartridges. All for 6.99 in the sales. Looks good in white as well. They also have a little retaining/adjustment screw for toeing in.

I use salmon on the front, black on the back.

For balance, I have used salmons. Good, but for VFM Discobrakes (impossible?) are very hard to beat.
