Just after some advice. I'm a big bloke - 6ft, 18 stone, but quite fit. I want to get into triathlon (I plan on using the bike mostly for training - 50 miles a week), but I haven't got a clue what sort of bike to go for.

I've got realitivley good mechanical knowledge from cycling years ago, so I'm not a complete beginner - maybe you can help:

1) What size frame should I go for?

2) What is a reasonable amount to spend on a bike that can do the business, without breaking the bank?

3) What bike/spec is recommended?

4) Is it better to buy straight from a wholesaler, or buy from a high street retailer?

Many thanks for your input.

Cheers.

Im no expert either big man, however the good news is theres many guys on this forum that can help.

1) Try getting on a few large frames at your lbs as its the best way to get measured up.

2) Entry - £400 to £650, novice - £650 to £1000, £1000+ can get expensive depending on how serious your taking it and can afford.

3) Il pass, except I wouldnt spend over £700 until you have done a few races and lots of miles under the belt before shelling out on a more expensive unit.

4) For comfort and building up some loyalty/support got your lbs. If your a reasonable mechanic, once you know the exact frame you could go online.

Best of luck on your choice bigman!

1) Horizontal tube would be around 56 - 58cms. For sloping top tubes check the individual geometry.

3) With the weight you really need a middle ranking groupset 105 Shimano or Mirage/Veloce Campag (as they are sturdy bits of kit) on an Aluminium frame with 32 Hole Rims and a triple chainset.

4) Also check out eBay.
