I went out with friends today, firstly we misjudged the time so it got dark still 15 miles to go, but having learnt from experience we had most of our lights with us. My friend forgot his magicshine, my 2nd front light broke so I couldnt lend him it, but we did have a spare set of frogs too and then one of my 2 rear lights ran out of batteries. We were 90% offroad anyway and our light setup was legal, just somewhat reduced. Easy to see how it can happen though I guess.I think alot of folk get caught out this time of year - lights have fallen off/broken/batteries gone flat - stay out longer than expected, don't realise its started oing dark a bit earlier.
I fully understand how it can happen, the point I am getting at is that some just don't care, in your situation you could I guess ride with a rider with reduced lights in the middle or behind or front depending whats missing, depending on distance from home and the type of road, but if your on your own, would you really want to take the risk with no lights.I went out with friends today, firstly we misjudged the time so it got dark still 15 miles to go, but having learnt from experience we had most of our lights with us. Sorry, I was replying more to the post than the threadI fully understand how it can happen, the point I am getting at is that some just don't care, in your situation you could I guess ride with a rider with reduced lights in the middle or behind or front depending whats missing, depending on distance from home and the type of road, but if your on your own, would you really want to take the risk with no lights.
I am not getting at anyone on here, as I am sure all people are fully aware of the importance of lights.
15 miles is a heck of a hike, but better than one in a wooden box, I am sure you agree.
What surprises me as well is how people are caught out with the nights drawing in, its pretty easy really we lose about an hr each month (its more like 50mins but it does vary because the orbit of the earth is not circular) from the end of June to the end of Dec (21st June the longest day to the 21st Dec the shortest, the amount varies a little from North to South, well it can be quite a bit in the extremes of north Scotland and southern England), we are early to Mid Sept pretty easy June dark by 9.30 exclude the extended twlight, July, Aug and 1/3 of Sept 2 and a bit hrs so assume its dark by 7.30, its not quite its a little later but the equinox is in 11 days 12hrs day 12hrs night and because of B.S.T. the sun will rise about 7.a.m. and set about 7 p.m.. and then another 3 months to Dec 21 another 2 1/2 to three hours lost, by which time we will be on G.M.T. and dark by 3.30 to 4pm depending where you are, it also varies east to west as well by as much as 8 mins I think ( I would need to look that up, my brain cells are getting old), and then its starts in reverse.
Sorry if I sounded a little overbearing just its a bit of a bugbear, I should really try and let it go.Sorry, I was replying more to the post than the threadIve only really been caught out either by getting out of the habit of needing lights for a few months or staying out longer than intended when cycling with friends, so unless I know ill be back well before dark I always take lights just incase and youre right we had the rider with minimal front light in the middle to keep it safe.
A friend of mine cycles a couple of miles to and from work, always wears black with no lights when he returns after midnight, rides on the cycleways and feels safer being invisable to avoid being mugged etc.![]()
I have come to the conclusion that very many and possibly the majority of cyclists dont beleive the rules apply to them..
