Did they say what may have caused it.
Its quiet good at night, though you do have to be more aware, and it gets cold.
I rode from Batley to Oldham in May 1996 I think it was, I was ok going over during the day, but coming back about midnight that down hill bit to Huddersfield on the A62 was a bit nippy.

Did it happen when you changed gear, from what you described I can only think of structurally weak metal, but without seeing it I cant really comment.

I am paranoid and even in the sunlight I just put my flashing Cat Eyes on so there are no excuses.

Talking of which, I need to ge some bright night time lights. I am sure this has been discussed so off to do a search.

Well I just ordered a Bryton Rider 35, so any new lights will need to wait (though I need a cheap back one for spare as one as just packed up, it works just dont turn off, well could use it as a spare I guess), I think some new gloves are next.

I think alot of folk get caught out this time of year - lights have fallen off/broken/batteries gone flat - stay out longer than expected, don't realise its started oing dark a bit earlier.
I went out with friends today, firstly we misjudged the time so it got dark still 15 miles to go, but having learnt from experience we had most of our lights with us. My friend forgot his magicshine, my 2nd front light broke so I couldnt lend him it, but we did have a spare set of frogs too and then one of my 2 rear lights ran out of batteries. We were 90% offroad anyway and our light setup was legal, just somewhat reduced. Easy to see how it can happen though I guess.

I fully understand how it can happen, the point I am getting at is that some just don't care, in your situation you could I guess ride with a rider with reduced lights in the middle or behind or front depending whats missing, depending on distance from home and the type of road, but if your on your own, would you really want to take the risk with no lights.

I am not getting at anyone on here, as I am sure all people are fully aware of the importance of lights.
15 miles is a heck of a hike, but better than one in a wooden box, I am sure you agree.
What surprises me as well is how people are caught out with the nights drawing in, its pretty easy really we lose about an hr each month (its more like 50mins but it does vary because the orbit of the earth is not circular) from the end of June to the end of Dec (21st June the longest day to the 21st Dec the shortest, the amount varies a little from North to South, well it can be quite a bit in the extremes of north Scotland and southern England), we are early to Mid Sept pretty easy June dark by 9.30 exclude the extended twlight, July, Aug and 1/3 of Sept 2 and a bit hrs so assume its dark by 7.30, its not quite its a little later but the equinox is in 11 days 12hrs day 12hrs night and because of B.S.T. the sun will rise about 7.a.m. and set about 7 p.m.. and then another 3 months to Dec 21 another 2 1/2 to three hours lost, by which time we will be on G.M.T. and dark by 3.30 to 4pm depending where you are, it also varies east to west as well by as much as 8 mins I think ( I would need to look that up, my brain cells are getting old), and then its starts in reverse.

Sorry, I was replying more to the post than the thread  Ive only really been caught out either by getting out of the habit of needing lights for a few months or staying out longer than intended when cycling with friends, so unless I know ill be back well before dark I always take lights just incase and youre right we had the rider with minimal front light in the middle to keep it safe. :highfive:

A friend of mine cycles a couple of miles to and from work, always wears black with no lights when he returns after midnight, rides on the cycleways and feels safer being invisable to avoid being mugged etc.

Sorry if I sounded a little overbearing just its a bit of a bugbear, I should really try and let it go.

Point taken about the mugging, though its something I have never worried about. I will say this at least traffic is a little less after midnight, both cars and ppl.
I carry enough stuff to rebuild the bike just about, only things I cant strip down, crank/chainset and headset, and cassette removal, though wouldn't take much to be able to do that, all that extra weight is handy for when I feel confident to take my camera gear. Also usually a Jacket and leggings of some sort, because you never know what will happen. The OH wont have tools in the car, well I was in the Lake district many years ago (Haweswater I think), when the wipers stopped working, I no mobiles in those days and miles from the nearest phone or building, anyway with a few tools and a plastic bag I managed to get them working, to get back to Manchester.

I often ride around with lights on my bike, just not switched on, so if I end up staying out longer than expected I'm not caught out. When I start commuting I'll just keep lights on my bike all the time. The trouble is ninja cyclists ruin it for the rest of us even if we're being safe because drivers see them and think we're all like that.
