Road bike brake cables in MTB levers

My Batavus seems to have road bike brake cables in MTB levers. The end of these cables slot into barrel-shaped adaptors.

I've lost one of these adaptors and am having difficulty finding another one. My LBS has told me to just fit an MTB style cable. I've done this and it seems to work but does anybody know of any problems that this might lead to?

If so do you know the proper name for these adaptors so I can look for one?

I don't know the adaptors but brake cables normally come with two ends, one mtn, one road. As far as I know, there's no difference, so it should be fine.

^^ wot 'e said. Good old fashioned Clarkes brake cables, different lump at each end. Cut off the end you don't want.
