Road and MTB Cassette Compatibility

I'm pretty certain the answer is, "Yes" but it is always best to ask.

My old mountain bike has a Shimano 8 speed cassette in 12-28 flavour. For road use with slick tyres I would prefer 12-21 or 12-23.

Are the cassette splines the same for 8 speed road and MTB?

Yes.

All Shimano cassettes will fit on, except for Capreo cassettes with 9-tooth small sprockets.
Cassettes of 7 speed or fewer, or 10 speed, will need an appropriate spacer
