RLJ rant

Thought I would just make a quick observation in light of the RLJ threads. Fair enough don't want to brake the law etc BUT what are you meant to do when you are on a sub road at TL waiting to cross/ turn onto a main road, when the TL is controlled by Piezo strips?? Not an issue in town traffic but I have just sat 5 minutes waiting for a green light to cross a main road whilst all other directions cycled through their turns several times, 'my' light didn't change until a car came along and parked up behind me triggering the strip.

Use common sense. Go, if safe.

No point sitting there for 5 mins hoping that a car will come along and set the lights green.

If they don't detect you, they are defective and after a reasonable time you can proceed with caution. I don't have the regs to hand, but I expect someone will be along shortly to provide a reference.

I have a junction like that on my commute. Zig-zagging over the detector seems to help, but if someone parks a car in the wrong place then nothing works. In those cases I just get off the bike and cross as a pedestrian.

Get off and push the bike across to the other side of the junction? Jaywalking is acceptable unlike RLJ'ing

this.

the inductive loop will only pick up ferrous metal so carbon bikes and alu bikes are not going to have an effect, as there is too small an amount of iron on the machine to trigger the loop IIRC the limit is 15 minutes for the light to be considered defective but thats a bit long to wait.
