Rim Wear Indicator

I've got a couple of mountain bikes in my garage. One is a British Eagle and the other is a Saracen. Both are about 15 years old but still going strong with all original equipment.

My question is: have rim wear indicators always been on rims as I have noticed these two bikes don't have them or they have been worn off. I find it hard to believe that they have worn off however because both bikes were/are only used now and again for recreational riding.

Some wheels don't have them or have the type which only appears when the rims are worn.

Agreed; Ok, I took them right to the edge of life but I did 1000's of miles after the wear markers appeared on my Quasar wheels, going by the indicator I would have replaced them 6months earlier.

Rim indicator on one of my wheels disappeared about 2000 miles ago. Rim is still fine. I wait until my lbs says it's time for a new one
