Rim Tape

I have got a new set of wheels - shimano R500's

The rim seems to have a solid plastic rim around the inside of the wheel - so does this mean i dont need rim tape - the are a few rough edges on the plastic were the hole is cut for the valve to poke through the rim??

That is plastic rim tape - a lot of good wheels come ready fitted with it.

You can cover the rough bits with some insulating tape etc - but most inner tubes have a reinforced bit at the valve for just such circumstances.

I always replace factory rim tape with Velox fabric tape. It's not the easiest stuff to install but I've never had it burst through on a valve hole. I always put an old high pressure tyre on the rim & pump up to maximum & leave for a few hours. This seems settle the tape in properly & allow the glue to work.
