Rim tape

Just wondering...

Previously when fitting tyres I would drop the bead into the well in the wheel rim to make it easier to fit. The tyre, once fitted was loose in the well but with a bit of air would seat onto the rim properly.

However, with the Schwalbe Marathons I just fitted to the Brompton rims I was struggling to stop the tyre bead pulling the rim tape up onto the bead seat.
I spent a lot of time with the tyre levers opening a gap and pushing the rim tape back down into the well to cover the spoke nipples.

Is there an easier way?

Cheers.

A couple of winds of electrical tape will hold it in place. Use a craft knife to trim the valve hole.

Is that as well as or instead of the rim tape?
When I was a kid many wheels were rebuilt using electrical tape as we kept forgetting to get rim tape from the bike shop.

Though 700c, I've just fitted a pair of Marathons to a wheelset and that has Velox rim tape on it, fitted fine and no problems with rim tape moving.

Velox is great. Users should be aware though that it is very low tack and it's important (particularly with new rims which may still have oily residue from the factory) to degrease the area you want to stick it to.

Any rim tape that can be "moved" by the bead of the tyre is not up to the job. Velox (as mentioned above) is good, as are some of the stiffer plastic tapes - Schwalbe "High Pressure", for example, is certainly stiff enough to stay in place in the well of the rim.

Or you could try these ?

Adhesive rim tape is superb, often it looks just lie nylon re-enforced selotape often called scotch tape.

It has two benefits to me, this tape doesn't slip which is a biggie, and secondly the side presented to the tyres is shiny and slippery, aiding the fitting of the tyre. I avoid Velox and similar for this second reason as every little benefit helps.

Many types available, but you so much feel your being ripped off for what is glorified selotapte

this is my tape of choice as shiny/slippery on the back:-
