I have been having a few punctures recently with my rear wheel that I believe are down to spoke(s) catching the inner tube (this will be confirmed later today). So I have just brought some rim tape that I intend to fit later today, my question is quite simply, is do I remove the old rim tape and then fit the new one or is there any benefit in fitting the new rim tape over the tape already in place?

Replace it rather than double up, otherwise it may be a tight fit getting the tyre back on. Why not sort the spokes out (if they're the problem)?

Definitely take off the old rim tape if it is being replaced. Plastic rim tape can be a bit poor, I had to replace the stuff on my road bike within months of buying the bike as it had deformed into the spoke holes so badly that it was no longer covering the holes at the edge of the tape!

I heartily recommend Velox cloth rim tape, never had any problems with it and it 'feels' right. There is an interesting, slightly rose tinted, bit of editorial HERE.

What new rim tape have you bought?

Before, pronouncing the rim tape guilty, have you gone all round the tyre looking for any sharp bits left in?
And when you refit the tyre, do you double check that the inner tube is sitting properly and has not been pinched by the tyre?
Also when refitting the tyre- just use your hands. No tyre levers. This is an art, but the tyre leavers can nick the inners as well.

Good luck
Keith

@ Sharky, all the points you mention I have do and do; including just using my hands but thanks for the feedback.

@ I like Skol, I have brought some Continental rim tape, which from the research I did on line before buying got good reviews but I suppose the proof will be in the pudding.

@ Herzog, what do you mean by sorting out the spokes?

Whenever I've had a bout of rear wheel punctures it's usually down to the cheap plastic rim tape wheels are supplied with when new going hard and recessing into the spoke holes, exposing the sharp edges of the holes.

Whenever I've fitted velox rim tape the problem has gone away completely. If you google I'm sure 99% of recommendations will be for velox. Usually about £2 a reel (for one wheel) but if you have a friendly lbs they can sell you some from their larger spool cheaply.
I also used nutrak tape which is like a plastic coated cloth and worked well.

Sounds like you've tried everything, so could well be the rim tape or protruding spokes. Good luck and keep us all posted with the results.

You mentioned:

I meant sorting out whatever the actual problem is rather than papering over the cracks (so to speak). Who've you spoken with to confirm spokes are the problem. Are they too long?

I fitted the tape on Saturday and went out both Saturday and Sunday; all went well so hopefully my problem is now resolved.

Thanks to all of you for your comments and suggestions.
