Last year I had real problems with riding my Brompton on the snow and ice to the point where I ran into work one morning. Typical problems were the derailer getting clogged up slipping off the bike several times. What kit do I need to get this bike to work through these conditions.

unfortunately another bike. below -3 deg celc the hub will turn into a 2 speed as well, then the rims freeze over which doesn't matter because any water trapped in the bottom bends in the cables stops the cables pulling.

bin there dun that!!

+1. Last year Southern stopped running trains along the coast so I decided to walk with my Brommie the 5 miles home. Just after Hove an MTB rider passed me so I decided to give it a go. As bromptonfb says it is not a very good bike for these conditions (I have an M6L) Everything clogged up with snow and ice so I was virtually a single-speeder. It got me home but it wasn't pleasant at all. I was amazed how well it stood up to the punishment to be honest. I will be fitting studded tyres to my MTB this year.

I'm best to buy another bike then am I?

depends on where you live and how mild this winter is. i managed to get thru the winter of 2009 with no incidents because the local authority did a good job of clearing the roads. i live at 250m my commutes go as high as 400m above sea level.

last winter they didn't do such a good job and i had to buy another bike.

the good thing about the brompton is that if you do need to step off, it's easily done with the low frame.

Oh bugger I've been getting more and more into the idea of buying a brommie  ... now I'm having 2nd thoughts, again.

Those days are very rare and the best thing about a Brompton is if you do get those conditions you can fold it up and take the bus, tube, train, taxi or friends car if need be. Can't do that with a full size.

this is true, plus they're far funkier than a full size bike
