Hi, I'm new to the forum and quite new to cycling. I live in the Scottish Borders and am looking for some cycle routes, either off road or on VERY quiet B-roads / single track roads.

Can anyone recommend something, either in the Borders or north Northumberland?

Thanks
Norm

Hi Norm,

There are loads of great paces to ride in the Borders and north Northumberland. I couldn't point you at any circular rides (apart from the Four Abbeys) off the top of my head, but have done a number of cross border rides using NCN 1 & 76 (see my blog). If you do go south of the border and go into a Tourist Info you can pick up a free Northumberland cycle map, hope that helps.

Borders & Northumberland are great for cycling!

... and if you want some company north of the border, have a look at the CC Ecosse rides advertised in the "informal rides" section of the forum. There is about one a month - the next one on 23rd October, starting from Falkirk.

Hi

That's great, thanks for the info. I'll definately pick those maps up as well.

I also noticed there is a section of the Coasts and Castles route that goes between Seahouses and Berwick. Has anyone done that? Any good? Is that section mostly off the main roads?

Thanks
Norm

Yep, start here, if you have a mountain bike and you are carrying luggage and you like off road paths, it is not too bad, personally I prefer to use the road. There is some nice scenery...

Where in the borders do you live? I grew up in Hawick so know the area pretty well. I also lived in Newcastle for a while so know Northumerland quite well. If I know where you'll be starting from and how far you want to go I could suggest some routes for you if you want.

You're very lucky if you want nice quiet roads as pretty much every road barring a couple of A roads are quiet in the borders!

If you want some company and a laugh there are a few clubs in the area which have rides for all abilities at the weekends. Such as Berwick Wheelers, Kelso Wheelers, Peebles cc, Gala cc, Hawick cc.

I live near Duns. Got a fairly old mountain bike at the moment so I'm looking to get a new one in Spring. To be honest, I need to get my fitness up as well but can't see me doing too much cycling over the winter months. Hopefully get a few nice days of course, but I'm not too hardcore in that respect.

Thanks again for the replies. Cyclists seem to be a friendly bunch!
