This weekend marks the 75th anniversary of one of the oldest races here on the East Coast of the US. The Tour of Somerville. Back in the late 70's and early 80's for us race starved Americans, this was a big event. I participated in several of the races leading up to the main Criterium which was for the elite riders of the day from North America and a few Europeans who had some time available but I was in a race a couple of days before Somerville with this guy. Can anyone identify him without doing a picture search?? Ha.

Never heard of him either. Speed skating in the UK isn’t a well known sport.
But a quick google search shows he was extremely successful.

I thought the photo looked a bit like Roger Federer, but he is too young

Eric Heiden. Won a shedload of gold medals - five, I think - at the Olympics for skating. Cycling was a big part of his training. Later I think he participated in a Tour or two.

Being both a cyclist and world elite speed skater, his legs looked like two tree trunks straddling a bike frame.
